1. Background
'ESIC' stands for Employee's State Insurance Corporation, a body created by law under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India on promulgation of Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 [In short, 'ESI Act']. It is the first major social security legislation for Indian workers. Under the ESI Scheme, the workers are provided with various benefits viz., medical, sickness, maternity, disablement, etc. Both employee and employer contribute under such scheme.
